Unpaid Work Placement Procedure
The Government of Ontario, through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), pays the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) for the cost of benefits provided to Student Trainees enrolled in an approved program at Laurier and participating in a compulsory unpaid work placements with employers who have WSIB coverage. If a student sustains a workplace injury, in a facility that is eligible for WSIB coverage, the student will receive WSIB coverage through the MTCU's firm number. Accident costs are not the responsibility of the Placement Employer.
MTCU also covers the cost of private insurance with ACE-INA for Student Trainees enrolled in an approved program at Laurier and participating in a compulsory unpaid work placements with employers which are not required to have compulsory WSIB coverage under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. If a student sustains a workplace injury, in a facility that is not eligible for WSIB coverage, the student will receive private insurance coverage provided by MTCU. Accident costs are not the responsibility of the Placement Employer.
The Government of Ontario provides such coverage to encourage the participation of employers in providing unpaid work placements for Student Trainees required as part of Ontario's publicly assisted postsecondary education and training programs.
Prior to the commencement of an unpaid work placement, students must complete a Student Declaration of Understanding, and submit it to their Laurier placement coordinator.
Also prior to the commencement of an unpaid work placement, placement employers must provide the student trainee with health and safety orientation training and must read and sign the Letter to Placement Employers.
In the event of a workplace injury or illness, Student Trainees participating in unpaid work placements are eligible to claim benefits through the WSIB or private insurance, depending on the the Placement Employer's coverage. Student Trainees must immediately report all workplace injuries or illnesses to the Placement Employer and Laurier (email@example.com).
Accident Reporting Information for Placement Employers
Within three days of learning of a work-related injury or illness to the Student Trainee, the Placement Employer must complete the following:
- WSIB Form 7 Employer's Report of injury/disease, leaving the firm number blank (to be forwarded to Laurier for submission to the WSIB).
- Letter of Authorization to Represent the Placement Employer for WSIB.
- Postsecondary Student Unpaid Work Placement Insurance Claim form.

Within seven business days of learning of the work-related injury or illness, Laurier must submit the following to the WSIB, MTCU and the Student Trainee:
- WSIB Form 7 Employer's Report of injury/disease.

- The complted Postsecondary Student Unpaid Work Placement Insurance Claim form.
