The Student Exchange Program Application is due at the end of January for the following Fall and Winter term exchange placements. This is a strict deadline. The applications are available for students early Fall through our online program on mylearning space. Students must attend an information session in order to gain access to the application forms. Students are informed that the application procedure may take up to 3 weeks to complete.
A Department Approval Form is required for each school that a student applies for. They are permitted to apply for an exchange opportunity at 3 schools. Students are required to meet with their academic advisor to gain approval for their participation in the exchange program. The purpose of this meeting is for the student and academic advisor to ensure that a term or year abroad will fit within their academic plan. The student will indicate what term they plan to go on exchange, and list the names of courses that are available at the institution that they feel will fit with their academic program. On this form, they also indicate what they will be doing on the semester before/after their exchange. If they indicate that they will be at Laurier, they are meant to list the classes they plan to take at Laurier. It is the students responsibility to ensure that the institution that they are applying to offers courses relevant to their program and if possible they should bring proof of course options with them to the meeting with their academic advisors.
This process is clearly explained to students at the information sessions that they are required to attend. If they come to you unprepared, please use this reference to set them on the right path.
In addition to this form, students may be coming to you with requests for you to be their Academic Reference. The purpose of this reference is to express your encouragement or concern about the student's capability to academically succeed in an academic exchange in a cross cultural environment. The referernce form is straightforward, and also offers you space to provide any further comments as you see fit.
Students are required to have a minimum GPA of 7.0 in order to participate in an exchange. If their GPA is lower, than they can complete a GPA waiver form. This waiver requires the signature of their academic advisor for their major. If the academic advisor feels that it is not appropriate for the student to participate in an academic exchange it is important that the advisor clearly states this on the form.
