Dr. Persinger suggests that "unfettered religious belief" makes a person more likely to commit a violent act. I can't speak for all religions, but I can address this accusation as it applies to Christianity. A person following the teachings of Jesus -- to the letter -- will never use violence or coercion to support or advance his cause. Jesus is unequivocal on this issue saying, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," and "Do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too." Yes, over the course of history and even today there are those who commit unspeakable acts under the banner of Christianity. But these people's actions are not due to over-zealous Christian beliefs; their depravity is caused by not being Christian enough. Conversely, those wearing the mantle of "Christian" who are brave enough to subscribe to Jesus's teachings in full are a force for good in this world. One need only look to the Christian Peacemakers, World Vision and countless other Christ-centred organizations to see this is so.
