A Place for Holistic Creative Healing
Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, a federated college of Wilfrid Laurier University, has a long history of offering degree programs and other educational opportunities in the field of spiritual care and psychotherapy. Dr. Delton Glebe recognized the importance of pastoral care and counselling education and was instrumental in the beginning of the counselling degrees and the introduction of contextual education into the Master of Divinity program in the late 1960s. The new centre is being named in his honor to recognize his vision, his commitment to “learning by doing” and his service in the community. The Delton Glebe Centre will be located at 177 Albert St. in what was previously the Lutheran Student House. Renovations will begin soon in preparation for opening September 1st.
The Delton Glebe Centre will offer counselling and preventative mental health services on a sliding fee scale to individuals, couples and families living in Waterloo Region. The Glebe Centre is committed to networking with other agencies and community groups in order not to duplicate services already offered but rather to supplement and enhance current services.
The Glebe Centre has entered into a partnership with Muslim Social Services of Kitchener Waterloo and is working with Counselling Services at WLU to find ways to augment and support the ongoing mental health services for university students. It is hoped that the Glebe Centre’s proximity to campus will support WLU’s Counselling Services to address some identified gaps in counselling services.
The Glebe Centre is a place for holistic creative healing which pays particular attention to diversity and multifaith issues as they pertain to the health and wellness of individuals, couples, families and communities. The model of counselling will encourage creative healing opportunities using art, music, drumming, play therapy, talk therapy etc. Assessment of client needs early in the counselling process will direct the modality that is used in sessions. While a short term model of counselling will be used when it is deemed appropriate through careful assessment, a longer term model of therapy will also be available to appropriate client situations. The Centre will be a practicum placement site for students enrolled in our counselling programs, professionals seeking supervised practice for certification and for some contract professional counsellors. The Centre will work in collaboration with the requirements and expectations of the new College of Psychotherapy.
