International Application Inquiries

1. Are non-Canadian students eligible to study at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary?

Yes. We warmly welcome students from all countries, denominations and backgrounds.  Please note the application process is longer and more complicated for non-Canadians so please begin the application process well in advance.

2. Can I get a scholarship from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary to come to Canada to study?

No. The Seminary regrets that there are no scholarships for international students.

3. English is not my first language; may I still study at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary?

Yes. Applicants whose language of instruction for an undergraduate degree was other than English must furnish evidence of proficiency in English usage prior to admission. A minimum score of 573 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or its equivalent is required, and a score of 600 or higher is recommended.

4. How do I prepare for studying in Canada?

International applicants are advised to apply six months in advance of regular application deadlines, due to the extra time it can take to receive the application materials in the international mail and to apply to the Canadian Government for a Study Permit.  More information for international applicants can be found at Citizen and Immigration Canada and Choose Laurier for International Students.

All non-Canadians must possess a Canadian Study Permit to study at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. The Canadian Government requires that a prospective (visa) student must present documentary evidence that there is a reliable source of funds adequate to cover your tuition, maintenance and return transportation. This means that before we can consider your application we must receive assurance that you are able to comply with the Canadian Government's financial requirements for obtaining a Study Permit. Persons in Canada under a Study Permit are not permitted to be gainfully employed.

If you plan to apply, we welcome you to contact Wilfrid Laurier’s International Student Coordinator at 519-884-0710 (ext. 6840) for guidance planning your studies in Canada.

5. What are the fees for international students?

Being well-informed regarding the cost of graduate studies is crucial in making your decision to apply for a graduate degree program.  A list of expected costs for international students can be found here: http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=36&p=631.  Tuition fees for Seminary programs are found here: http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=12516&p=18367.

"Leaving Jamaica and coming to Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, I did not know what to expect. My experience here has been great so far.  The faculty here is wonderful, they are always ready to listen, the students are really great.  I have found out the secret here, that the Seminary caters to harmonious development of the mental, physical, and spiritual faculties. This  is the place where we make friends for eternity."  --Kemar Fender, MA Theology: Spiritual Care and Counselling
