How Are Our Students Measuring up? Using Assessment to Align our Practices and Inform our Decisions

More than an act of accountability, assessment provides us the opportunity to discover how well students are learning based on our instructional approaches and course and program design. How can we use evidence about student learning as the basis for

curricular design, new pedagogies, and educational practices to advance or improve our studentsí learning? Dr. Makiís interactive keynote will an overview of an outcomes-based assessment process that chronologically samples and assesses student work within the context of teaching practices, collaborative agreement about learning outcomes, and criteria and standards of judgment to score student work. This process is driven by intellectual curiosity not only about what students learn (and the obstacles they face as they learn), but also about how they learn and how well they are capable of applying, transferring, and integrating learning into new contexts. 

Dr. Makiís presentation will use case studies from various institutional contexts to illustrate how evidence-based approaches to assessment can lead to changes in instructional practices that improve or advance student learning. As part of the morning session, Laurierís Faculty of Education will showcase their Bachelor of Education assessment plan and how they use the results from this plan to make student-centred curriculum improvements and to determine how well students are meeting their program learning outcomes.

Following the morning keynote, Dr. Maki will meet with department/program curriculum committees on a one-to-one basis to strategize and explore options to further plans directed at assessing program learning outcomes. On Thursday afternoon, these appointments will be scheduled at the Waterloo campus and on Friday morning at the Brantford campus. Curriculum committees interested in taking advantage of this opportunity to meet with Dr. Maki are encouraged to contact Sally Heath (sheath@wlu.ca) early to reserve a time slot.

Dr. Maki is an internationally renowned, scholar, author (e.g., Assessing for Learning), higher education consultant, and speaker called upon by state-wide educational consortia, academic institutions, and the American Association of Colleges and Universities.

Peggy L. Maki Biography

Peggy L. Maki is a higher education consultant who specializes in assisting undergraduate and graduate colleges and universities, higher education boards, higher education organizations, and disciplinary organizations integrate assessment of student learning into educational practices, processes and structures. Her work also focuses on assessment within the context of accreditors' expectations for institutional effectiveness. She serves as Assessment Field Editor at Stylus Publishing, LLC; serves on several editorial advisory boards for assessment publications; and recently served on the national advisory board for AAC&Uís VALUE PROJECT: Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education. She has served as assessment consultant and workshop leader (1) for the Carnegie Foundationís Integrated Learning Project; (2) for a Teagle grant awarded to consortia of colleges and universities across the United States; and (3) for a Mellon grant awarded to Appalachian colleges and universities focused on assessing students' learning in mathematics, the sciences, and writing. She annually serves as one of AAC&Uís assessment consultants in its summer institutes.

For three years she served as sole consultant to the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education and its public higher education institutions under a multi-year assessment project. In May, 2011 she was appointed by the Commissioner of Higher Education in Massachusetts to serve as the Stateís assessment consultant to assist its 28 public institutions build their assessment capacity and to develop a pilot project that will report out studentsí achievements based on scoring studentsí authentic work. She has delivered national webinars at the request of Inside Higher Education, Educause, and Project Kaleidoscope for its focus on assessment in the sciences.

Formerly, Senior Scholar and Director of Assessment at the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE), she has served as Associate Director of the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., New Englandís regional accrediting body; Vice President, Academic Dean, Dean of Faculty, and Professor of English, Bradford College, MA; Chair of English, Theatre Arts, and Communication, Associate Professor of English, and Dean of Continuing Education, Arcadia University, PA. She is a recipient of a national teaching award, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, has given several honorary lectureships at colleges and universities for her work in assessment, and is a frequent keynote speaker at national and international assessment conferences.

She has conducted over 500 workshops and keynote addresses on assessment both in the U.S. and abroad and frequently publishes articles on assessment. Her handbook on assessment, Assessing for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment across the Institution, was published in 2004, by Stylus Publishing, LLC. In late 2007 Stylus published her co-edited book, The Assessment of Doctoral Education. In late 2010, her second edition of Assessing for Learning, now a bestseller in higher education, was published by Stylus Publishing, as well as her edited collection of faculty perspectives on and experiences with assessment, Coming to Terms with Assessment.
