Deparmental Central Waste & Recycling Program
The Departmental Central Waste Program has significantly helped Laurier achieve over 60% waste diversion in response to mandates from the Ministry of Environment, which requires yearly audits. This information is calculated as a scope 3 energy emission for our university-wide greenhouse gas reduction targets.
This program has played a significant part in Laurier's sustainable leadership profile,
modeled by institutions and businesses alike
This program removes desk-side waste bins in place of a central waste centre with full-scale recycling and composting capabilities.
The centres are all located within a reasonable distance to offices to ensure accessibility and comply with egress codes. The centres are made out of recycled plastic and are manufactured locally by Clean River.
Laurier now services 'single-stream/commingled' recycling which means all recyclable materials (except for cardboard) can go in the same unit or stream. For those areas that still have the older infrastructure that separates recycling, please continue to separate and the custodial staff will empty into our recycling bins.
The introduction of organics at Laurier has played a huge role in increasing our waste diversion rate (see 'waste' for yearly audit results). Refer to the list below for information on what can go in the organics bin.
