Procurement

Laurier is committed to assessing the environmental impact throughout all life-cycle phases of all purchases.

Reducing the amount of new purchases and avoiding participation in an overly commercial society is environmentally beneficial but is not always possible.  In circumstances where it is unavoidable, sustainable procurement practices should be adopted. As consumers, it is important to be informed and choose products that have been created under sustainable practices, with low energy costs, minimum waste, and have a small overall environmental footprint.

The Sustainability Office is proactive in helping to ensure that purchase decisions are environmentally conscious and that sustainable procurement practices are used by university departments. This means assessing and considering the raw materials and energy used during the manufacturing processes, and distribution of all products that the University’s purchases.

Sustainable Purchases on Campus:

  • Custodians use green seal certified cleaning products.
  • Printing Services purchases 10%, 30% and 50% post consumer recycle content paper, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, and energy star rated multi-functional printers and copies
  • Physical Resources purchases T5 and T8 compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Information Technology Services purchases Toshiba laptops rated gold by the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT).
  • Food Services and WLUSU purchase food from local suppliers when possible.
