Current research program:
Early Childhood Development: Travelling Ideas, Complex Translations (PI. SSHRC funding awarded May 2010).
This research programme focuses on the dynamics of social policy reform in the area of early childhood education and care (ECEC), a policy field receiving increasing attention in Canada and across the globe. While domestic concerns – falling fertility rates, population ageing, the care gap produced by women’s rising labour force participation, human capital formation – have contributed to this new prominence, so too has the work of international organisations, such as the Organisational for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank. How do such organisations understand the respective roles of states, markets, families and communities in promoting ECEC? What impact are they having on policy development and politics in Canada, Mexico and Argentina?
