Information for Graduates



Celebrate before you GRADUATE!

Being a soon-to-be Laurier graduate has its advantages.

The Spring Convocation ceremonies will take place on Wednesday, June 5 - Friday, June 7 in the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.  For a map to the WMRC please click here

Guest Seating:

Seating will be on a first come first serve basis and there are no tickets required. Please contact Sharline Doss, sdoss@wlu.ca.

Graduation Participation Card:

The Graduation Participation Card will be mailed out two weeks before the ceremony to the address in your LORIS account. These cards will be delivered to all students who have been cleared to graduate.  To check if you have been cleared to graduate please follow these instructions:

  • Log into Loris
  • Click on 'Student Records'
  • Check either 'Official Grades' or 'Unofficial Record of Course Work'
  • If it states 'Granted' then you have been cleared to graduate, however if it states 'Applied' then your application is still being processed

Graduation Participation cards will not be mailed if there is a hold on your account. 

This card must be presented for you to join the convocation procession.  Should you misplace your card, a duplicate will be available prior to the ceremony at the registrar's table located where the grads will line up for the procession. 

You may be asked to provide the correct phonetic pronunciation of your name on this participation card for use by the presenter.  Please write your name phonetically on the front of your card beside your typed name. Do not blackout any names on the card, strike through only if you do not want it announced.

Candidates who have been cleared by the second week of  May to graduate will appear on the final draft of the Convocation Program which will be posted on the Convocation homepage approximately one week prior to the event.

International Students

If you are an international student who has guests attending the ceremony please contact Sharline Doss, sdoss@wlu.ca  indicating the following details:

  • Name of International Student
  • Ceremony time or program student is graduating from
  • Country guests are flying from
  • Number of guests

Gown Rentals:

Undergraduate and Masters degree Candidates do not require pre-booking of graduation gowns and hoods.  A $25 rental fee is required at the time of gown pick up which will be in the Hauser Haus on the second floor of the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. Please arrive approximately an hour before your ceremony to ensure enough time for gown rental procedures.   PhD and DMin Candidates must reserve their Academic Regalia with the bookstore six weeks prior to graduation.  Rental fee is $115. Parking:

Parking will be available at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex and is free for the convocation ceremonies.  However parking is limited.

In an attempt to decrease our carbon footprint, the university strongly encourages convocation graduates and guests to use more sustainable forms of transportation to the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. Please consider using public transportation, walking, cycling or carpooling to the Spring Ceremonies.

Accessibility and Special Needs Seating:

If you require accessible seating for your guests, or have other accessibility requirements, please indicate your requests on the online form which will be posted shortly.

If you are a graduating student and have accessibility needs (eg. require a mobility lift, have the support of a service dog, FM system, Braille or alternate format parchment/degree, sign language interpretation, attendant support for stage or seating navigation, etc.) for the Convocation ceremony please click here for the online Accessibility Needs form. Please indicate in as much detail as you can, your specific accommodation needs and identify your Faculty and Major.

Academic Regalia:

Each graduand is required to wear a black gown for the ceremony.  However, graduands receiving a degree must not wear the hood until the Registrar places it around the graduand's neck on stage.  It is at this point the graduand becomes a graduate.


Arrival Time for the day of the ceremony:

Plan to arrive at least 1.5 hours in advance of the ceremony to rent gowns, pick up photo composites/ yearbooks and get in line for the procession.

Class Composites & Yearbooks:

Graduates who have had their photograph taken by Lifetouch Photographers and paid the sitting fee, can pick up their class composite and yearbook at the gown and hood rental location, on the second floor of the WMRC in the Hauser Haus.  Please contact Angela Taylor in Student Publications  at 519-884-0710, ext. 3560 or angela.taylor@wlusp.com  for further information.

Photographer at Convocation Ceremony:

A photographer from Grad Images will be taking on-stage photos of all graduates.  Proofs will be sent to the graduates home address.  Visit www.gradimages.com or call 1-800-424-3686 to order pictures.  At the ceremony there will be a designated area for family and friends to take photographs.

Degree/Diploma Frames:

Frames may be pre-ordered or purchased on the day of Convocation.  For more information please click here

Memorabilia and Gifts:

Giftware, grad rings and Laurier clothing can be purchased through the Bookstore.  Rings, flowers and other memorabilia will also be available for sale at convocation.

Faculty Receptions following each Convocation Ceremony

Receptions will be held for each ceremony.  Graduates, family and friends are all encouraged to attend. All receptions will be immediately following the ceremony unless otherwise noted.  For more information please click here.

Convocation Non-Attendance Form

Please complete and submit the non-attendance form which will be posted shortly if you are unable to attend the Waterloo Spring Convocation ceremonies.  Only those students who have applied to graduate and have been cleared for the ceremony, may use this form.
