Special Constables at Laurier are sworn Peace Officers who are
employed for the preservation and maintenance of the public peace. As
such, we enforce City of Brantford
By-Laws, Provincial Offences and Federal Statutes when
contravention is on, or in relation to, any University owned property. We
have the same powers and authority on campus as the Brantford Police have
for the Province
of Ontario. As
such, we may lay charges and/or make arrests under the same legal
authority. We wear uniforms that identify us as Special Constables, which
set us apart from police constables. We must meet specific criteria as
set out by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services
and are sworn in by an Ontario Justice of the Peace. We work in
collaboration by written agreement with the Brantford Police Service.
When appropriate practice alternative measures through the Judicial Affairs Council
here at Laurier.
