Jordan is a 4th year Concurrent Education student. She lived in Rizzo in year one, with three years following off-campus.
Living in Brantford has been way better then I could have ever expected! I came from a large city (Toronto) and was expecting a huge change. Yes Brantford is different then Toronto, that is no secret Ė it is a lot smaller with fewer options. Turns out I love it anyways!
I lived in residence my first year and ended up living with some great roommates. Although Brantford has fewer options for things to do then bigger cities I still managed to have an amazing time- no matter what day of the week it was my roommates and I found something to do, even if it was as simple as a late night bus trip to Wal-Mart or cheap night at the movies.
In my second year I moved into the Harmony Square apartments with one of my first year roommates. Living in apartments that has a management company as your landlord is great. We never had to worry because if something went wrong there was always someone to call and help out no matter the time or day.
My third year I moved into a place where my landlord was the owner. This was a different experience then what I was used to because if we needed something done we had the task of getting a hold of our landlord- which was never easy. This meant if the fire alarms were going off at 11pm on a Sunday night and our landlord decided not to answer the phone then we had to find a friends place to crash at until our landlord could come the next day to shut it off. I have decided to stay in this apartment for my fourth year because even though dealing with my landlord can be difficult at times I love where I live and the price I pay for rent, so it ends up trumping my landlord.
Take the time to look at a lot of places for the right one to live in as an upper year student. Get involved both on-campus and off-campus. Brantford is not the small and boring city most people perceive it to be so try and be open minded. Lastly, donít be afraid to stick around on a weekend or in the summer- you and your friends will find things to do :)
