Academic Partnership Program (APP)
The Faculty of Science Academic Partnership Program is intended to help first year students become integrated into the academic life of the University. Research has shown that the student who becomes “engaged” will do much better academically and personally than the student who maintains an isolated existence.
In this program, first year students are partnered up with senior student mentors in their academic program. The senior students’ responsibility is to make themselves available to meet in person or correspond via email with the first year student. The expectation is that the senior student will share valuable experiences, familiarize the new student with campus resources, and discuss study skills and time management. There will be additional opportunities to help identify an academic problem early on and direct the new student to the appropriate academic advisor.
This is an informal program. The amount of time that the first year student spends with their senior student mentor is entirely up to the partnership. Note that the senior student is NOT a tutor and will not be expected to help students learn course material.
