Laurier business student named to Top 20 Under 20 list
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
Corey Sherwood, a Laurier business co-op student currently on his first work term as a marketing intern with Xerox Canada in Toronto, has been named a Top 20 Under 20 for co-founding a new mentoring and resource website for high school students and for his fundraising efforts for Haiti.
Presented by Youth in Motion and sponsored by Intact Insurance and Intact Foundation, Top 20 Under 20 is a national youth award and mentoring program, offering recognition and unique opportunities to Canadian youth.
“It was really overwhelming to win this award,” said Sherwood. “It was amazing to see the accomplishments of the other 19 recipients, and we really want to collaborate and impact the world on a larger scale.”
Sherwood, 19, is already helping high school students make crucial decisions about university and college with an online social media platform he co-founded called Student 2 Future. Through the website student2future.com, mentors from around the world are available to help answer questions about lectures, residence life, and even nightlife.
“Choosing a university and knowing which program I wanted to do was one of the hardest decisions of my life,” said Sherwood. “The most important thing is helping kids make a decision.”
With a father who is a civil-rights activist, Sherwood said he always felt the need to help where he could. So when his mother’s birthplace of Haiti was hit with a devastating earthquake in 2009, he founded WLU Haiti – which stands for We Love You Haiti. Through his fundraiser, the Laurier community raised $18,000 for earthquake victims through bake sales and a partnership with Wilf’s where proceeds from a designated night were donated to the fundraiser.
“For all the success that I’m being recognized for, I really thank the Laurier community for helping me out, because it really wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
In the future, Sherwood would like to expand Student 2 Future across Canada and pursue his MBA. He also plans to continue helping where he can.
“I think it’s important specifically for us to help because we are so privileged and we have so many resources available to us,” he said. “You take a look at the world and there are so many causes you can get involved in, even at Laurier.”
