Social work symposium to look at practice within the LGBTQ community

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Jan 21/11

The Social Innovation Research Group (SIRG) is hosting a symposium on social work practice within lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transsexual and questioning (LGBTQ) communities Jan. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 120 Duke St. West, Kitchener.

“Queering Social Work” will build landscapes of experiential and academic knowledge regarding queerness and deviance as they relate to social work education and practice. Through the celebration of diverse voices and the use of various media, participants will explore queer marginality and examine the intersection between various queer realities.

Patricia Elliot, chair of the Department of Sociology at Laurier, will deliver the keynote speech on the ethics of embracing sexual diversity.

Several other academics, professionals and community members have also been invited to speak in order to provide a wide range of perspectives on various issues within the context of the LGBTQ community.

Featured sessions include:
•    Queering the DSM: Questioning Medical Models of Psychotherapy
•    Inclusive Counseling and Mental Health Service Provision with LGBTQ Clients
•    Arts-Based Social Development and the LGBTQ Community
•    Dangerous Intersections and Queer Diversities: What Are We Missing?
•    Homophobia and Transphobia Make Us Sick!: LGBTQ Healthcare Research
•    Having Faith in Queers: Religion, Spirituality, and Sexual Orientation
•    Community Organizing and Queer Solidarities Across Borders

There will also be a screening and discussion of the documentary “Bad Fit: Challenging the Prevalence of Homophobia, Transphobia, and Heterosexism in Social Work Education.”

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please email qsw2011@gmail.com or phone 519-884-0710 ext. 5232.
