Laurier marks reopening of 50-metre pool

Nov 20/09

WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University marked the reopening of its 50-metre pool today with remarks from many of the people who helped raise funds for the $4.2-million renovation project and with a ceremonial plunge involving nine swimmers from Laurier and various community clubs.

The renovations were made possible through generous contributions from Laurier students, community users, the provincial and federal governments, and the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener.

Speakers at the official reopening event included Dr. Max Blouw, Laurier president and vice-chancellor; Laura Sheridan, president of the Wilfrid Laurier University Student Union; Peter Braid, Kitchener-Waterloo MP; Leeanna Pendergast, Kitchener-Conestoga MPP; Chris Bennett of KW Aquatic Alliance; Mayor Brenda Halloran of the City of Waterloo; Councillor Christina Weylie of the City of Kitchener; and Peter Baxter, Laurier’s director of Athletics and Recreation.

The 35-year-old pool is the only 50-metre competitive aquatic facility in Waterloo Region. It is used by many community groups, including the Region of Waterloo Swim Club (ROW), KW Synchronized Swim Club, Waterloo Regional Synchronized Swim Club, and the KW Water Polo Club, as well as high schools, elementary schools and Special Olympics athletes. The pool is also used by many in the Laurier community, including the varsity swim team, intramural participants and recreational swimmers.

The key elements of the repair project included replacing the aging air-handling and de-humidification system and the curtain wall, repairing pressure-relief valves in the pool and improving mechanical space and interior finishes, including the pool deck, walls, lighting, drains and equipment.
