Laurier appoints experienced partnership-builder to Assistant Vice-President: External Relations
Wilfrid Laurier University has appointed Joel Peters, an accomplished marketing executive with a long track record of partnership-building, to the position of Assistant Vice-President: External Relations, effective Aug. 11.
Peters has a wealth of leadership experience in marketing, community relations, industry partnerships and innovative collaborations. He attended Harvard University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Biochemical Sciences. He went on to receive a master’s degree in landscape architecture through the renowned Harvard Graduate School of Design. For the past eight years, Peters has served as Senior Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer for Tourism Toronto. Previously, he served as Vice-President, Marketing and Commercial Development at the Royal Ontario Museum. He has also held senior planning and marketing roles at the Toronto Zoo, including Director, Business Development, and Director, Planning and Analysis.
The role of Assistant Vice-President: External Relations replaces the former position known as AVP: Communications, Public Affairs and Marketing (CPAM). Reporting to the University President, the AVP: External Relations will lead CPAM and University Community Relations, and will work with deans, faculty and administrative leaders to promote the continued integration of entrepreneurship and innovation across all facets of the university.
“Laurier’s external relations activities are critical to building awareness of the university and strengthening the bonds we share with our many partners, stakeholders and communities,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Max Blouw. “Joel Peters brings tremendous skill and experience in these areas, and I very much look forward to working with him as we continue to develop partnerships and collaborations that position Laurier for ongoing success.”
Peters is excited to be joining the Laurier community.
”I am honoured to join Dr. Blouw and the senior leadership team at Laurier with its well-established history of teaching and academic excellence,” he said. “In addition to their innovative efforts to develop a strong multi-campus platform, I see a university committed to exploring new ways to partner and collaborate, all of which will be in greater demand as Laurier endeavours to advance its reputation and core programs. I am excited for the opportunity to contribute to these efforts.”
