Continuing Studies launches new certificate in Program Evaluation as Organizational Development
Whether they’re public, private or not-for-profit, most organizations are continually looking for ways to improve their programs or services. A new certificate being offered at Laurier will provide individuals and organizations with an opportunity to learn how they can effectively evaluate what they’re offering and make improvements.
This new certificate in Program Evaluation as Organizational Development (PEOD) is being offered by the Centre for Community Research, Learning and Action (CCRLA) at Laurier in partnership with Laurier’s Office of Continuing Studies. Laurier is the only institution in Waterloo Region to offer this kind of professional learning opportunity.
Designed for professionals, recent graduates and students who conduct evaluations and review policies and programs as part of their job, the PEOD certificate will introduce participants to several evaluation approaches and designs. This unique set of courses will give participants the necessary tools to demonstrate to boards of directors or funding sources how their programs are either improving or already successful. The courses will address practical skills such as:
- Developing a strong program theory
- Conducting interviews and focus groups
- Survey development
- Analyzing survey and interview data
- Effect report writing
“We are excited to be able to offer this valuable new learning opportunity in partnership with Laurier’s Office of Continuing Studies and our partners in the community,” said Manuel Riemer, an associate professor of psychology at Laurier and director of the CCRLA. Riemer initiated and developed this certificate with Mark Pancer, a recently retired member of Laurier’s Psychology Department, and Tanya Darisi, director of Guelph-based research and evaluation organization, The O’Halloran Group.
“This certificate offers a comprehensive introduction to how individuals and organizations can effectively use evaluation to improve their programs and services and integrate it into their overall organizational learning and development efforts,” added Riemer. “We have recruited some of the best experts in program evaluation from both Laurier and the Kitchener-Waterloo community to be our instructors. Together, we hope to build evaluation capacity in Waterloo Region and beyond and ensure that the community continues to have access to high quality and effective programs and services.”
The PEOD certificate will be offered on Laurier’s Waterloo campus, from Sept. 3, 2014 to March 4, 2015, with classes being held every other Wednesday from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. The courses will cover 13 units using a blend of classroom and online learning components. The fee for the certificate is $1,100.
As part of their community capacity building efforts, United Way Kitchener Waterloo and Area and United Way Cambridge and North Dumfries are providing 50 per cent tuition sponsorship for eligible organizations, in addition to supporting the development of the certificate. Tuition sponsorship is available to staff members of agencies within Waterloo Region; priority will be given to agencies currently supported by United Way. To apply for this sponsorship and for more information please send an email request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
“United Way KW is pleased to partner with Laurier, the CCRLA and United Way Cambridge and North Dumfries to offer this valuable evaluation training as part of our ongoing efforts to support the not-for-profit sector and build organizational capacity,” said Jan Varner, CEO of United Way KW.
