Laurier academic appointed Chile’s ambassador to China

Jun 27/14

Jorge Heine, professor of political science at Laurier and chair of Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, has been appointed Chile’s ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.

Heine, a native of Santiago, Chile, has held prominent academic positions in Europe and Latin America, and high-profile posts in diplomacy and public service. He served as Chile’s deputy minister of defence and ambassador to South Africa in 1994, and was later appointed the Chilean ambassador to India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in 2003. He joined Laurier in 2007, and was also named a distinguished fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation.

Heine has written extensively on diplomatic theory and practice, publishing his latest book, The Oxford Handbook of Modern Diplomacy (Oxford University Press) in 2013. He is also past vice-president of the International Political Science Association.

He will be on leave from his position at Laurier for the duration of his three-year appointment in Beijing.
