Laurier welcomes National Youth Orchestra of Canada's Summer Training Institute

Jun 24/14

The National Youth Orchestra of Canada’s (NYOC) Summer Training Institute began June 22 at Wilfrid Laurier University. This marks the second year of a long term partnership between the two organizations.

The Laurier Faculty of Music welcomed the 94 musicians and 40 professional faculty members to begin the NYOC’s chamber and orchestral music training program.

“It’s thrilling for me to welcome many brilliant young musicians to the Faculty of Music. The NYOC provides an unparalleled learning and performing experience," said Glen Carruthers, dean of the Faculty of Music. "As our lives become more complex, the performing arts play a crucial role in helping us think creatively and deeply about the world around us. These young musicians will play a key role in our cultural development in the years ahead, and it’s an honour to have them studying and rehearsing here at Laurier.”

The NYOC’s tuition-free annual summer training institute is a comprehensive chamber music and orchestra program which includes a minimum $1,000 scholarship for each participating musician. The Summer Training Institute culminates in a national concert tour with performances in key cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, and Vancouver, as well as the Kitchener-Waterloo region and others.

The 2014 orchestra will be conducted by internationally renowned conductor, Emmanuel Villaume.

During the NYOC’s 2014 residency, Laurier will be sponsoring a chamber music concert series featuring NYOC students and faculty. These concerts will be open to the public free-of-charge in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall (Laurier Faculty of Music). The schedule of concert dates is listed below:

About the National Youth Orchestra of Canada:

For more than 50 years, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada has enjoyed an iconic reputation as Canada’s orchestral finishing school, providing the most comprehensive and in-depth training program available to our country’s best young classical musicians. As the bridge between music education and a music career, NYOC trains well-rounded and skilled orchestral musicians who are able to thrive in a variety of performance environments. More performers in Canada’s professional orchestras are alumni of the NYOC than any other institute or university. NYOC is proud to host Canada’s only summer institute that offers a comprehensive training program, concert tour, and recording session to participants with no tuition required. Each student chosen from auditions is supported by scholarship funding provided by NYOC’s generous donors.
