Poetry slam event at Laurier features top spoken word performers

Mar 8/13

A book launch for critically acclaimed New York slam poet Carlos Andrés Gómez, as well as spoken word performances by Gómez, Kahsenniyo, Ian Keteku and Sofia Baig, will be held March 12 at Laurier’s Waterloo campus.

Starting at 2:30 p.m. in the Hawk’s Nest, the spoken word artists will lead a discussion on art, politics and social justice. The discussion is titled “Subversive Voices and Subaltern Knowledge: Spoken Word as Critical Pedagogy.”

From 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., Laurier will host a book launch for Gómez’s Man Up: Cracking the Code of Modern Manhood in the Hawk’s Next. The memoir was inspired by his one-man play, and is a powerful coming-of-age story that redefines masculinity for the 21st century male.

All of the artists will take part in a poetic justice spoken word performance from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Turret.

The Department for Sociology, the Office for Aboriginal Initiatives, the Dean of Students and the Diversity & Equity Office are sponsoring these events.

All events are free and open to the public. For more details, contact Jasmin Zine at jzine@wlu.ca.
