Laurier LaunchPad program to compete for top entrepreneurship education award

Sep 21/12

Laurier’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship team will head to Halifax next week to compete for the Innovative Entrepreneurship Education Award after its flagship Laurier LaunchPad program was named a finalist.

The award, provided by the Canadian Council for Small Business & Entrepreneurship (CCSBE), aims to acknowledge innovative entrepreneurship courses that positively influence the students who take them. Participants must demonstrate innovativeness, course effectiveness, student impact and transferability.

“We truly believe in our mission statement that every student at Laurier has the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship,” says Steve Farlow, executive director of Laurier’s Schlegel School of Entrepreneurship. “The Laurier LaunchPad was created to do just that and we’ve seen some great successes already.”

The Laurier LaunchPad, previously known as the Laurier Entrepreneur Accelerator, is a hands-on program that is open to students from all faculties and campuses at Laurier. The collaborative program provides budding entrepreneurs with access to industry leaders and mentors who provide a real-world experience of the venture creation process.

“This is a leading-edge example of Laurier’s commitment to integrated and engaged learning,” says Farlow.

The program operates out of the Kitchener-based Communitech Hub in a dedicated Laurier space affectionately known as the Sandbox. Students are encouraged to remain in the Sandbox after graduation to help ensure the success of their venture.

The CCSBE is a membership-based organization in Canada whose goals are to promote and advance the development of small business and entrepreneurship through research, education and training, networking and dissemination of scholarly and policy-oriented information.

Participants will compete for the award during a CCSBE conference Sept. 27-29.
