Laurier mourns the loss of Delton John Glebe, a pastor and former principal-dean of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. Glebe passed away Wednesday, May 11 at the age of 92.

Glebe was known as a charismatic pastor, teacher and leader.

"He uniquely understood the human spirit,” said David Pfrimmer, principal-dean at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. “Pioneering in his field of pastoral care, he helped people to live fully by teaching them to understand grief and death.”

Glebe enrolled in Laurier, then Waterloo College, in 1944. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947 and a divinity degree in 1950. Later, he received a doctorate in theology from Knox College at the University of Toronto.

He became a pastor and mission developer, but the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary also asked him to lecture part time – a rare tribute to a new graduate. In 1960, he was named a full-time member of the seminary faculty and was chairman of the board of governors when the institution received its charter as Waterloo Lutheran University.

In 1970, he became principal-dean of the seminary and witnessed the university undergo another big change: to provincially funded Wilfrid Laurier University. Glebe remained principal-dean until he retired in 1984 – though he continued to teach at the seminary long after.

“A modest man with a towering legacy, Delton mentored at least three generations of leaders who built the church, the university, and the significant institutions in the wider community,” said Pfrimmer. “Delton will be lovingly and gratefully remembered."

Visitation is being held Saturday, May 14, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo. The funeral is being held Monday, May 16 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 22 Willow St., Waterloo.

Memorial donations to the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary’s Delton J. Glebe Bursary in Pastoral Care and Counselling or to Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo can be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home.
