Laurier hosted a reception and calligraphy exhibit by renowned Chinese artist Hongliang Wang on Friday, Dec. 2 at the university’s Toronto Office.

Speaking to a capacity crowd of 36, the artist delivered a lecture during which he demonstrated various calligraphy techniques. He also presented several of his artworks as gifts to Laurier and to other members of the community.

The artwork presented to Laurier was commissioned by Laurier honorary degree recipient Francis Pang as a gift to the university on the occasion of its centennial year. Pang spoke at the event, as did Peter Donahue, director of Laurier International, and Laurier President Max Blouw. 

“Mr. Wang's works demonstrate the elegance of ancient China and are thick with atmosphere that reveals the richness of Chinese culture,” said Donahue. “It's no wonder his works are cherished by collectors throughout China.”

Wang’s calligraphic works incorporate traditional and modern scripts, and are valued by collectors around the world. He holds high-profile positions at several organizations, including honorary dean of the Research Institute of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at Zhengzhou University.

In addition to the gift to Laurier, the artist presented works to Laurier Chancellor Michael Lee-Chin (accepted on his behalf by Blouw), Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran and the honorable Albina Guarnieri, retired MP from Mississauga East.

He also gave pieces created during his demonstration to Blouw and to Laurier International.
