WATERLOO — Wilfrid Laurier University is pleased to announce a very generous gift of $12.7 million from the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union (WLUSU).  Laurier students recently passed a Student Life Levy referendum agreeing to this gift, to be spread over the next 10 years.

The Student Life Levy has been created to enhance student life at Laurier. The gift will provide increased opportunity for students to engage with one other and their environment in a culture of learning outside of physical classroom space.

“The Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union is very proud to be in a position to grant such a generous gift to Laurier,” said WLUSU President and CEO Kyle Walker. “This is the largest gift given to date to Laurier during its centennial, and we are pleased that it is from the students for the betterment of the students.”

The new Student Life Levy will also be used to engage in activities leading to improved personal health and fitness, including a $5 million gift for an Athletic Complex Fitness expansion.

“We are thrilled that the Waterloo campus students’ body has voted positively on the Student Life Levy referendum,” said Rob Donelson, vice-president of development and alumni relations. “The Student Life Levy supports a variety of initiatives that have a wonderful impact on our students, and on the quality of student life. We are grateful for their continued support.”

The gift will also be used to fund needs as determined by WLUSU and the university. Previous to this Student Life Levy, students had generously donated $8.5 million to Laurier over the past eight years.
