Haiti Relief Efforts Continue
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
In Haiti’s time of need, the Laurier community has banded together to form the Laurier Haiti Relief Aid. The goal of the group is to raise $5,000 for the Canadian Red Cross by January 29. To support this project, the Laurier Bookstores have already collected $3,500 from faculty, students and staff.
Collection booths for Laurier Haiti Relief Aid will be available in the concourse on the following days:
Thursday, January 21
5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. (**concourse & BA210**)
Friday, January 22
11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
WLUSU is also organizing fundraising initiatives. Wilf’s will be donating $1 from the sale of every meal purchased on Friday, January 22 and the Terrace Food Court will be donating $1 from every purchase on Saturday, January 23. As well, the Turret will donate all cover charges from this Saturday. The money raised through WLUSU will be included in the Laurier Haiti Relief Aid campaign total.
Some professors have even issued challenges to their students to raise a certain dollar figure as a class, which they would then personally match.
The “We Love U (WLU) Haiti!” fundraiser will be running campus-wide next week commencing with a rally in the concourse on Monday, January 25. All proceeds from this week-long fundraiser will go to the Laurier Haiti Relief Aid. The rally will feature a bake sale, live music, and several campus clubs showing their support. For the remainder of the week, there will be collection desks in the Peters building and the science building.
Corey Sherwood, who is leading the “We Love U Haiti!” fundraiser, has a personal connection to the devastated nation.
“My mother is from Port-au-Prince,” says Sherwood. ”She is truly my motivation for doing all of this.”
Please note that the Canadian Red Cross issues tax receipts for any donation of $10 or more. When you make a cash donation on campus, the group will record your full name, address and phone number, and will submit the information to the Red Cross on your behalf.
If you would like to donate by cheque, please ensure the cheque is made out to the Canadian Red Cross, with a memo stating "Haiti Earthquake." The cheque must include your full name, address and phone number on it. The Red Cross will mail tax receipts.
Laurier Haiti Relief Aid has also formed a Facebook group, which provides updates and information about collection periods and events. The group is public.
