Laurier science alumnus Paul Smith to speak about his career in biotechnology

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Feb 5/10

Wilfrid Laurier University alumnus Paul Smith, vice-president of sales and business planning for biotech company Axela, will speak Friday, Feb. 26, as part of the Life After Laurier Science speaker series.

Smith graduated in 1975 with a degree in chemistry. Since then he has spent more than 28 years in the life-science instrumentation field, primarily focusing on protein measurement and purification. Recently, Smith worked abroad as director of European operations and then vice-president of European and North American sales for Ciphergen Biosystems.

Smith returned to Canada in 2006 to join Axela, a biotechnology company that makes sensors for measuring protein, viruses and bacteria for life-science research and clinical diagnostics. With a diverse background in sales, marketing and field operations, Smith aids in commercializing Axela’s technologies through direct sales and collaborative partnerships with academic and pharmaceutical clients.

For his Life After Laurier Science talk, Smith will discuss his career and how Laurier was the foundation to his professional success.

When: Friday, Feb. 26, at 2:45 p.m.
Where: Rm. N1002 in the Laurier Science Building

Refreshments and networking will follow the talk. All are welcome to attend, but please R.S.V.P. by emailing: nextgenerationscience@wlu.ca.

The Life after Laurier Science series offers an opportunity for students, faculty and friends to meet with science alumni who have built inspiring and successful careers. Smith is the fourth guest speaker in the series.
