Arts Express camp celebrates another successful year
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
Laurier’s 21st annual Arts Express camp concluded on a successful note as family and friends of campers gathered at the university’s Waterloo campus for a performance based on the theme, “Under the Sea.”
Arts Express presents the opportunity for children with and without special needs to participate in a week-long arts-based camp that culminates in an original dramatic dance and music recital.
Leading up to the recital campers aged six to 13 work with students from Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo and Conestoga College.
These university students work towards receiving credit for Laurier’s course MU353: Inclusive Arts for Children. Throughout their term, students review theories in creative arts therapies and strategies for working with individuals with special needs. This preparation leads to the hands-on learning component of the Arts Express camp.
Elizabeth Mitchell’s involvement with Arts Express began seven years ago as the part-time instructor of MU380E.
“The individual child’s engagement in the creative process is of far greater importance than the achievement of any particular artistic product,” says Mitchell. "Children are encouraged to explore self-expression in an environment that encourages and empowers them. This is a beneficial experience for anyone, and it is of particular importance to children with diverse needs and abilities.”
For the university students who assist with Arts Express, Mitchell believes that “this is a remarkably impactful experience for many of the university students as they are able to take creative risks, exploring artistic expression alongside the campers."
Arts Express is organized through Wilfrid Laurier University’s Music Therapy program in conjunction with the Carousel Dance Centre, Conestoga College, KidsAbility and the University of Waterloo.
