Languages & Literatures faculty members present at Congress 2012

Many faculty members from the Department of Languages and Literatures took part in Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences hosted by Wilfrid Laurier University, from May 26th - June 2, 2012. This annual event drew nearly 8,000 participants from across Canada and abroad.
Dr. Nathalie Freidel
Dr. Freidel chaired a session on "Laughing in Early modern French Literature" on May 29th at WLU.

Dr. Mercedes Rowinsky-Geurts
Dr. Rowinsky-Geurts organized, chaired and presented the following session on "High Impact Practices and Affective Learning in the L2 Class: Challenges and Rewards". Dr. Rowinsky-Geurts also presented a paper titled: "Historias digitales: el español conectado a la vida de los estudiantes"

Dr. Vanessa Rukholm
Dr. Rukholm presented a paper titled: "Facilitating Lexical Acquisition Through Song: the Case of Beginner Italian" which reports findings from a quantitative study examining the effectiveness of song on the facilitation of vocabulary learning in adult beginner learners of Italian. Dr. Rukholm has also been invited to give a talk on this same subject at the Libera universita' di Bolzano in Bolzano, Italy in September 2012.

Dr. Corina Sandu
Dr. Sandu chaired a session on Film Adaptations of 19th century French literature. Dr. Sandu also presented a paper about "Hollywood adaptations of Alexandre Dumas fils' novel La Dame aux camélias".

Dr. Alexandra Zimmermann
Dr. Zimmermann presented a paper titled: "Friedensmission auf der Schusslinie und Aufstand des Mopsordens Zur freimaurerischen Rezeption und Aufführungspraxis von W.A. Mozarts und E. Schikaneders Zauberflöte" on May 27th at UW. (Peace mission on the line of fire and uprising of the order of the pugs. On the masonic reception and performance practice of W.A. Mozart's and E. Schikaneder's Magic Fute).

Dr. Judith Ainsworth
Dr. Ainsworth presented a paper entitled "L'impact de l'assurance de la qualité externe sur les résultats de l'évaluation de programmes d'études en langues de spécialité" at CAAL (Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics) at Congress. She also chaired a session on "Writing competency in adult ESL and foreign language learners" at the CAAL meeting.
