Dr. Mercedes Rowinsky-Geurts will be presenting: "The Box of Dreams: Literature and Memory" as part of the Languages & Literatures Open Forum Lecture Series.
Exile creates unrecoverable spaces that deepen with time. Dreams appear as threads that could start to weave bridges so creativity may travel the unconscious in an imaginative journey. Carl G. Jung explains that often, human beings do not pay attention to dreams and consider them as “a simple appendix of consciousness.” (Vision Seminars, 9) But we need to consider, continues Jung that such attitude could be dangerous due to the fact that dreams must be interpreted correctly, not only to understand oneself, but to understand the world around us. Cristina Peri Rossi’s poetry present itself charge with dreams allowing her to create imaginary bridges to cross boundaries, spaces and time. Past and present intertwine in Peri Rossi’s writings, creating a landscape where the impossible becomes a reality. The self travels in dreams uncovering the veils of what seemed forgotten. At the same time, messages remain latent in the unconscious: its emergence through dreams creates new possibilities, new opportunities. Hope.
