Putnam Competition Training at Laurier

Mar 14/11

We are pleased to announce that we are in the process of organizing a team of students from
Laurier to participate in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. This is an
annual event administered by the MAA and this year it will be held on December 3rd, 2011.

The competition began in 1938 and is designed to stimulate a healthful rivalry in mathematical
studies between undergraduate students in colleges and universities of the United States and
Canada. Prizes will be awarded to the departments of the institutions with the five winning
teams. Students are eligible to participate in the competition no more than four times.

Detail can be found at the official competition website: http://math.scu.edu/putnam/

If you would like preview some of the past problems (some with solutions), they can be found
at: http://amc.maa.org/a-activities/a7-problems/putnamindex.shtml

As well, check out the poster on the Mathematics board opposite the 5th floor elevator in
Bricker Academic.

If you are interested in being a participant of this prestigious competition, please send me
an email at shu@wlu.ca by NOON October 7th (next Wednesday). There will be training sessions
once we get a team together, so you would need to be prepared to set aside at least one hour
per week for these training sessions.

NOTE: No grades are associated with this competition, but you will be able to put on your CV.
Also, it is a great opportunity to hang out with your cool colleagues. Last, but not least,
we don't have to win.
