Laurier kinesiology and physical education professor Dr. Stephen Wenn has been invited to participate in a prestigious lecture series about the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The series is called Intellectual Muscle: University Dialogues for Vancouver 2010. It was developed by Vancouver 2010 and the University of British Columbia in collaboration with The Globe and Mail newspaper and with universities across Canada.

Described as an “eclectic series of talks by prominent and up-and-coming Canadian intellectuals,” the lectures will be delivered at universities across Canada and made available online in podcast form. The online program will include polls, discussion forums and other interactive features, providing an opportunity for audiences to participate in a series of national dialogues.

The lecture by Laurier’s Stephen Wenn is titled “The Olympic Movement and the Road Ahead: Status Quo or will the IOC Tackle the Big Issues?” and will be available as a podcast Nov. 19 on The Globe and Mail’s Intellectual Muscle site. In his talk, Wenn identifies Eurocentrism, the underrepresentation of women on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its executive board, and the need to solve the lingering dispute between the United States Olympic Committee and the IOC over the distribution of television and corporate-sponsor revenue as major agenda items for IOC president Jacques Rogge in the final four years of his presidency.

Wenn’s research focuses on the nexus of sport and commerce, including the evolution of the IOC’s relationship with international television networks.  He is a co-author of the book Selling the Five Rings: The IOC and the Rise of Olympic Commercialism and is currently working on a book manuscript dealing with the Salt Lake City bid scandal of the late 1990s. Wenn is also the immediate past-president of the North American Society for Sport History.
