Conciliation dates set to help facilitate CAS negotiations
Wilfrid Laurier University and the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association (WLUFA), which represents Contract Academic Staff (CAS), will meet with a provincially appointed conciliator March 30 and April 6 to help facilitate the current round of CAS bargaining.
Conciliation is a normal part of the collective bargaining process and occurs in the majority of collective agreement negotiations. The conciliation officer’s role is to act as a facilitator and assist the two sides in reaching a settlement.
The University and WLUFA bargaining teams have met 29 times since the start of negotiations on Sept. 14, 2010, according to a schedule developed to accommodate the teaching commitments of the WLUFA members and the schedules of the University team.
WLUFA submitted a formal request Feb. 17 to the Ontario Ministry of Labour asking for the appointment of a conciliation officer. The University is optimistic that the involvement of an experienced, independent third party will be helpful in resolving the outstanding issues.
The University remains committed to reaching an agreement that is fair and equitable for both parties, and in the best interests of the institution and its students.
