Laurier Brantford
Robert Bell Lecture Series looking for volunteers
Oct 1/12
Dear students,
The Department of Criminology is seeking
enthusiastic student volunteers with strong communication, writing and research
skills to assist Brantford high school students in preparation for a model
parliament and moot court competition. This year Laurier Brantford is involved
in Robert Bell Lecture Series and Debates and we will proud to present our
upper year students as mentors for high school students. Your participation
will provide you with an opportunity to experience what it is like to conduct
research and prepare for a moot court. This experience will contribute to your
co-curricular record as well. Each participating Laurier student will be asked
to contribute approximately 3 hours per week between October 12th and November
29th.
If you are interested in this exciting
opportunity please contact Dr. Nikolai Kovalev at nkovalev@wlu.ca or Dr. Lauren
Eisler at leisler@wlu.ca.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The series was created in 2011 to honour
the memory of the late Robert Bell who was a wonderful educator and human
being. The mission of the project is to expand Mr. Bell’s innovative teaching
techniques where learning was fostered through student participation.
The inaugural series (2011) focused on
researching, writing, debating and arguing the enhancement of nuclear energy
versus the enhancement of green energy.
The lecture component was held in October
at Pauline Johnson Collegiate where former M.P.P. and current ward 5 City
Councilor, Dave Neumann presented a lecture on how an idea becomes a law and
Professor Alan Young from Osgoode Hall Law School gave a lecture on how a law
is challenged in court.
Five Brantford high schools participated in
the series. Two high schools formed a team that represented the Federal
Government, two other high schools formed a team which represented the Official
Opposition, while the fifth high school’s team represented the third official
party.
The students then spent the next six weeks
drafting a bill, drafting an amendment to the bill, drafting pleadings,
preparing speeches and preparing arguments for the model parliament held
November 23rd at Brantford City Council Chambers and the moot court held
November 24th at Superior Court in Brantford.
This year Robert Bell Lecture Series and
Debates will be held in a similar format and the teams will debate a topic,
which is very crucial for Canadian society. Laurier Brantford will provide the
lecture space for the initial lecture and upper year students will be able to
participate in assisting high school students with conducting research,
drafting a bill, and preparing arguments to be presented at the model
parliament and the moot court. The period will commence mid-October and end
after the moot court to take place near the end of November.
