Laurier MBA team wins first place in international case competition

A team of Laurier MBA students have won top place in the prestigious Aspen Institute’s Business and Society International MBA Case Competition held April 4, 2014 in New York City.
Coached this year by faculty member and Laurier MBA graduate of 2007, Kevin McDermott, along with Laurier MBA graduate of 2011 and former Aspen champion, Priyanka Lloyd, the Laurier MBA team included Valen Boyd, Chris Buckley, Eric Goll and Steve Thompson – all students in the one-year, full-time Laurier MBA program. Laurier’s annual participation in the competition is sponsored and supported by the P&G Centre for Business & Sustainability in the School of Business and Economics.
Competing against 24 other teams from around the world – and one of three Canadian universities including Schulich and University of Alberta from Canada, as well as prestigious international universities including London Business School, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management – students presented their ideas and solutions to a case study produced by the Yale University and Tecnologico de Monterrey on the expansion of the Amaranth Market in San Miguel.
“Our wins at Aspen this year and in 2011 are a great example of how the Laurier MBA program foregrounds social and environmental sustainability alongside business excellence,” said McDermott. “The Laurier MBA team competed against some of the best business schools in the world; they expertly delivered their solution amid significant pressure and competition from the other teams and won a well-deserved top finish.”
Founded in 2009, the Aspen Institute’s Business and Society International MBA Case Competition aims to communicate that social, environmental and ethical issues are central to business growth. The competition involves three rounds. The top five finalist teams presented on April 4 in New York City to a panel of esteemed judges and executives from the case company.
The Laurier MBA team won a grand prize of $15,000 and an additional $1,000 to be donated to Bridge to Health – an organization that works to advance the health and well-being of communities, working with the San Miguel company studied in the Aspen case. In 2011, a team of Laurier MBA students won this international competition as well.
