Laurier and the University of Waterloo celebrate World Water Day March 22

Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo will celebrate World Water Day 2013 at Laurier’s Waterloo campus on Friday, March 22. The event, which takes place in the Paul Martin Centre and the Senate and Board Chamber, is co-hosted by the two universities and features keynote speakers, graduate student research, and a screening of the award-winning film, People of a Feather.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2013 as the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation. The Water Cooperation theme incorporates natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication. The UN’s objective is to raise awareness of both the potential for increased cooperation and the challenges facing water management in light of the increase in demand for water access, allocation and services.
Schedule highlights include:
Opening Ceremonies, followed by Gail Krantzberg (McMaster University), presenting "Great Lakes, Great Responsibilities"
11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Student research poster session
Bruce Pardy (Queen’s University), presenting "Drowning in Confusion: The Debate Over Water Rights"
Screening of the award-winning film, People of a Feather, with remarks by film director and cinematographer Joel Heath
Poster awards and “Blue Drinks” social
World Water Day is open to all. Come out and join the celebration.
The events are organized by graduate students at Laurier and UW and sponsored by Students of the Water Institute Graduate Section (SWIGS), Laurier’s Cold Regions Research Centre, The UW Water Institute, and the Laurier Institute for Water Science with additional contributions from the Laurier Graduate Students Association and the Office of Research Services at Laurier.
