Third year business co-op student Julie Mitchell is the
winner of the Zonta Club’s Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship. The scholarship, worth $400 dollars, also
allows Mitchell the opportunity to move forward to a district- then
international-level competition for additional scholarships, worth up to
US$5,000.
“It was really the balance of interests that Julie displayed
that made her an outstanding candidate,” says Rosemary Pell, who is on the
awards committee for this area’s Zonta club.
“Her passion for music, sports, volunteering and coaching verified a
drive that really fit. She’s moving
forward, connecting with people, and becoming a role model.”
Mitchell was announced as the winner at a Zonta meeting last
week. Her nomination will move forth to
the district level, and at the end of July will be judged against a possible 43
nominations from other clubs in this district.
If Mitchell is successful at the district level, she will compete
internationally for the US$5,000 scholarship with 29 other districts from
around the world.
Mitchell’s success so far has already been highly
impressive, and as Pell glowingly emphasizes, “she is truly a deserving
candidate.”
The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is open
to women enrolled in an undergraduate degree in business, leading to a business
management career. The program is
designed to encourage undergraduate women to enter careers and to seek
leadership positions in business-related field in their communities and
throughout the world. The scholarship
will be offered again next year, and applications will be available in early
January 2007.
Zonta International is a Worldwide Service Organization of
Executives in Business and the Professions working together to Advance the
Status of Women. Locally, the Zonta Club
of Kitchener-Waterloo works to improve the quality of life for women through
fundraising and charitable giving and by recognizing outstanding community
