Update regarding annual seasonal lunchtime celebration

In past years, the Laurier community has had the opportunity to gather together at a lunchtime seasonal event organized and funded by the university. According to new Broader Public Sector (BPS) expense guidelines, which have been introduced by the provincial government in recognition of the current era of fiscal restraint, this type of employee event falls into the category of hospitality and is no longer permissible. As a result, the university will not be organizing a seasonal event as it has in the past. This decision also reflects a requirement to reallocate 10 per cent of executive office expenditures into other university activities.
The BPS rules are placing new restrictions on all publicly-funded universities and other organizations across the province. It is important to note, however, that the restrictions have been introduced at the same time as government is making important new investments in post-secondary education.
While the university will not be in a position to organize a holiday gathering for faculty and staff this year, we want to work with you in the year ahead to identify new ideas for how we can come together to share the spirit of the season, and new ways in which we at Laurier can share the seasonís cheer with the community.
