WATERLOO – Laurier’s School of Business & Economics will celebrate $800,000 in new funding support from the Chartered Accountants of Ontario (CAO) with a cocktail reception April 18 at 4 p.m. in the KPMG Atrium, Schlegel Centre, Wilfrid Laurier University.
The new pledge of $800,000 has been crucial in helping to include accounting in Laurier’s PhD in Management program. It also provides support for accounting PhD students and professors. In addition, the pledge provides an important step in fundraising towards a new building to house the School of Business & Economics.
In recognition of the CAO donation, Laurier will unveil a new CA Gold Medal Wall of Fame. The wall honours Laurier’s gold medal winners in the Canada-wide final evaluation for chartered accountants. Past winners include Paul Van Bakel ‘92, Sarah Hadley ‘01, Jennifer Hayton ‘05, Anna Nowak ‘07, Jacob Bell ‘08, Simon Parmar ‘94, Dennis Kavelman ‘93 and Agnes Dykstra ‘97.
Since 1993, Laurier's SBE accounting graduates have achieved gold more than any other Canadian university at both the national and provincial level in the annual chartered accounting uniform final exams.
Support from CAO, which to date is approximately $1.4 million, also helps to fund the CA/Laurier Centre for the Advancement of Accounting Research and Education. The Centre was established to promote excellence in research and teaching, and to encourage knowledge development in accounting education and practice.
In addition, the CAO funding has helped Laurier acquire databases for accounting research, fund research assistantships and support the CA/Laurier Centre Speaker Series.
