Laurier students raise awareness for homelessness

WATERLOO – Four students from Wilfrid Laurier University are spending five nights outdoors to raise money and awareness for local youth-at-risk shelters. The event is part of the national 5 Days for the Homeless campaign, taking place March 14-19.
Participants live “homeless” on their respective campus for five full days and nights. They follow a strict set of rules, including: no food or drink other than what is donated to them, no access to shelter, no disposable income, and no bathrooms other than what their student cards allow them to access. They must also fulfill all academic responsibilities and blog about their experiences daily using public computers.
Last year, Laurier students raised more than $7,500. This year, the students’ goal is to raise $10,000 for The Argus Residence and KW ROOF, shelters that provide housing and life skills training for homeless youth in the Kitchener-Waterloo community.
“It’s for an amazing cause,” said Gray McCarty, Laurier business student and event organizer. “We often turn a blind eye to these people and so often we forget that they might be on the streets for reasons beyond their control.”

The 5 Days for the Homeless campaign was founded four years ago at the University of Alberta. Last year the campaign raised almost $175,000 for charitable organizations across the country.
