The School of Business and Economics Students’ Society (SBESS) announced the date of its 8th annual SBE Orientation Day (O-Day) for first-year students: Sunday, September 7, 2014.
For the past seven years, the SBESS has hosted O-Day to give more than 600 first-year business and economics students an early glimpse at the experiences that await them at Laurier’s School of Business and Economics (SBE).
"The SBESS student engagement team is thrilled to be planning O-Day 2014, our flagship event for first-year students,” said Vanessa Buttinger, SBESS vice-president of student engagement. “We have continued to host O-Day year after year because we know that it allows every first-year student a chance to see just how far their Laurier degree can take them.”
O-Day begins at the Schlegel Centre with interactive breakout sessions hosted by upper-year SBE students, first-year professors, and Laurier alumni. Students will be able to choose three of five sessions to attend by registering online for O-Day. These sessions will allow students to learn about their first-year classes, the co-op program, how to get involved within SBE and much more.
In the afternoon, students will be transported to Bingemans’ Conference Centre in Kitchener for a three-course lunch. Each first-year student will be seated at a table with their peers and an upper-year mentor, who will be able to answer questions and offer advice for succeeding in first year.
Afternoon activities will also include an address from Micheál Kelly, dean of SBE, and a keynote speech from a distinguished Canadian business leader. Previous speakers at O-Day have included Robert Herjavec (entrepreneur – “Dragons’ Den,” “Shark Tank”), Tim Penner, Laurier BBA ’77 (former president, Procter & Gamble Canada), and David Chilton, Laurier BA (Economics) ’96 (author - The Wealthy Barber, and entrepreneur – “Dragons’ Den”). This year’s guest speaker will be announced in August.
Tickets for O-Day 2014 are available now at www.SBESS.ca. Students will also be able to pre-order exclusive SBE Class of 2018 merchandise online and at the event.
About the SBE Students’ Society
The SBESS serves as a central organization that keeps Laurier’s business and economics students of all years connected by providing programming, events, services, and financial support to SBE students.
We are funded through the SBE Faculty Fee collected from SBE students. In addition, our corporate partners across Canada help to provide additional funding towards our programs, events, and services. Working alongside the SBESS team are 20 business and economics clubs, which support student interests that range from accounting to marketing, leadership to online business, and everything in-between. A significant portion of the funds SBESS collects are granted annually to our 20 SBE clubs to assist them in operating and expanding their own mandates.
Students can learn more about the SBESS programs, services, and events by visiting us online at www.SBESS.ca, reaching out to us on social media, or visiting our office located in the Peters’ Building, Room P1003.
