WATERLOO — Laurier’s Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work kicks off National Social Work Week by honouring Ontario’s Minister of Government and Consumer Services Ted McMeekin with the faculty’s Graduate Honour Award.
McMeekin, a Laurier alumnus and social work practicum professor, was nominated for the award by three former students. In addition to his political success, his nomination letters describe McMeekin’s extensive volunteer roles, his “exemplary supervision” of social work students, and his passion for social justice as a “tireless advocate for people in need throughout Ontario.”
“Minister McMeekin provides our students with a unique and challenging opportunity to experience social work in the political arena,” said Lesley Cooper, dean of the Faculty of Social Work. “We are pleased to be able to acknowledge Ted for his contributions to our students and for his work at the community and provincial levels.”
The award will be presented at Laurier’s Social Work Week opening ceremonies on March 3, which include a keynote address by Laurier president Dr. Max Blouw.
Additional events include a public presentation on treating men with addictions, to be held on the evening of March 3, and a Research Day on March 4 that highlights faculty and student research activities. Week-long seminars for Laurier faculty, staff, students and local social work professionals will address men’s issues, Aboriginal perspectives, elder issues, interfaith perspectives and HIV/AIDS awareness.
The theme for the 2008 National Social Work Week is "Social workers advocating for human rights in a diverse community." The annual event, organized by the Canadian Association of Social Workers, recognizes the contribution of social workers to the community. It runs in Ontario from March 3-10.
The March 3 opening celebration and lunch begins at 12 noon in the Faculty of Social Work Auditorium at 120 Duke St. W., Kitchener. Media are welcome.
