New Funding: NSERC I2I Grant to Dr. Dmitri Goussev

Dr. Dmitri Goussev has recently received funding from the NSERC Idea to Innovation (I2I) program for the research project "Efficient, stable and easily accessible catalysts for hydrogenation of esters".  The funding amount is $69,400 for one year.  This I2I grant is only the second I2I grant ever award at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Summary of Proposed Research

Reduction of carboxylic esters is a common reaction in organic chemistry. Existing classical techniques are hazardous and they are accompanied by excessive formation of chemical waste. New transition metal catalysts from Dr. Goussev's laboratory facilitate a 'green' ester reduction process affording alcohols under hydrogen gas with essentially no chemical waste. The objective of current research in Dr. Goussev's group is to offer academic and industrial chemists affordable, easy to handle, readily available and efficient homogeneous catalysts for hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds. These new catalysts will be of interest to Canadian and American flavour and fragrances manufacturers and producers of specialty and fine chemical compounds.
