Michael McCleary wins Gold Medal for Master's Study in Arts
Congratulations to English and Film Studies student Michael McCleary who was awarded the Gold Medal for Master's Study in Arts at the spring convocation.
Michael McCleary, who completed his BA in English at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, has been awarded the Graduate Gold Medal in Arts at the Master's level.
Michael completed his Master of Arts in eight months, taking eight courses and working as a TA. He says that he was most impressed with the supportive interactions with the faculty from English and Film Studies.
Michael commented, "the faculty encouraged me to expand my horizons and participate in extracurricular programs, whether it be as an MA representative in Department meetings or working collaboratively with students from other faculties to lead undergraduate reading groups during the Laurier Reads events. I found the interdisciplinary and intermedial teachings of the program to be positively challenging. The blend of literature, film, theory, philosophy and ethics has influenced and shaped my PhD interest and focus."
In the fall, Michael will begin his PhD studies at Laurier under the supervision of Dr. Russ Kilbourn. He will explore the ethical and political implications of subversive adaptations and other intermedially subversive texts.
