"Environmental Rhythms" to be heard this weekend

On May 11, Jesse Stewart, an award-winning percussionist, composer, and improviser who can coax unexpected sounds out of a resonating object or material nearby, will perform in The Turret on the Wilfrid Laurier University campus.
On May 12, John Luther Adams and a large group of percussionists present Inuksuit, a sonic installation of natural and percussive sounds at the Rare Charitable Research Reserve in Cambridge.
Later that same day, works by John Luther Adams, J. Mitchell Burke, V. Globokar & M. Burtner, Christian Ledroit, and Ann Southam will be presented at Laurier’s Maureen Forrester Recital Hall. All of the compositions in the concert will explore percussive sounds of and in the environment.
The Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound features the use of unusual venues and a very eclectic range of musics from new classical music to electroacoustics, musique actuelle and sound installations. The focus of all events is the act of listening. Featuring a mix of local, national and international artists, concerts have featured ensembles from traditional ensembles such as string quartet, orchestra, choir to turntable art, musique actuelle, outdoor electroacoustic events, multi-media and dance.
