Summer Issue of Opera Canada magazine celebrates Laurier's Faculty of Music
Aug 31/11
The Summer 2011 issue of Opera Canada magazine brims with references to Laurier’s Faculty of Music. The front cover features alumna Allyson McHardy and the back cover remembers Maureen Forrester, a former chancellor of Laurier, who passed away a year ago. The magazine also includes a feature on alumna Jane Archibald (and a favourable review of her latest CD), who returns to Waterloo October 28 & 30 for a centennial opera gala, and a glowing review of this past winter’s production of The Magic Flute. As well, the magazine includes a review of a CD by Karina Gauvin and Marc-André Hamelin—Gauvin performed in the MWM Financial Group’s Distinguished Artist Series earlier this year, and Hamelin comes to campus on January 21, 2012, the next featured performer in that series.
In the Archibald article, mention is made that the opera star received Laurier’s Alumna of the Year Award earlier this year, and in the McHardy feature, the mezzo cites David Falk and Leslie O’Dell, instructors of hers at Laurier, as major influences on her artistic development.
Dr. Glen Carruthers, Dean of the Faculty of Music, says the repeated, glowing references to Laurier’s Faculty of Music are amazing and well-deserved. “I was happy to make the Dean of Arts envious yesterday,” he writes in a light-hearted email, telling of the pride he felt as he read the magazine.
