Laurier Centennial Choral Celebration
March 26, 27, 2011
Problems rise before you:
Problems of race division,
Problems of economic conflict,
…but you have a safe guide, an unfailing light
if you remember that
faith is better than doubt and
love is better than hate…
The words of hope and affirmation, spoken by Sir Wilfrid Laurier are part of the text of a new choral composition that will be given its world premiere on March 26 and 27 in the Theatre Auditorium. The WLU Alumni Choir, in celebration of the centennial of Wilfrid Laurier University, has commissioned Dr. Leonard Enns (a Laurier Alumnus) to create a choral work that reflects the spirit of Laurier and that has lasting appeal. With Light Unfailing (note the WLU initials) will be performed by the combined Laurier Singers, Concert Choir, and Alumni Choir as part of a choral centennial celebration.
In addition to Dr. Enn’s premiere, Laurier composition majors have submitted their own works to be performed by the various choral ensembles as part of this celebration. Audiences will hear new works by Jacqueline Annis, Rebekah Cummings, Jennifer-Lynn Del Duca, Sarah Gates, Narim Kim, Kylie MacKay, Michelle Psutka, and Emily Walker.
Choral Director, Dr. Lee Willingham remarked, “It is a rare privilege to bring new artworks into the public consciousness. There is no doubt that we are hearing compositions from emerging composers who will become well-known to music lovers in the next generation.” He also paid homage to the work of the Alumni Choir in continuing their support of the university and by commissiong With Light Unfailing by the internationally renowned composer, Len Enns.
The concerts take place on Saturday, March 26, 8pm, and Sunday, March 27, 3pm in Laurier’s Theatre Auditorium.
