WLU Alumni Choir a big part of Homecoming
Cabaret production, dedication of choir-purchased baby grand part of the weekend
The WLU Alumni Choir hosted an entertaining, talent-showcasing Cabaret on Saturday evening of Homecoming 2012 in the Paul Martin Centre. An audience of approximately 50 people gathered to enjoy musical selections performed by current and former students as well as faculty members of the Faculty of Music. Nine recipients of the Keith Knights Award or WLU Alumni Choir Scholarship (Kate Applin, Meghan Bunce, Samantha Pickett, Karina Bray, Nathaniel Wiseman, Angela Burns, Jayne Hammond, Jessica Lalonde, and Brittany King) sang a varied program of opera arias, lighter music and jazz. A sextet known as Les Six (consisting of Zacharie Fogel, Darren Watts, Blair Spry, Zach Vander Muelen, Gary Butler and Ivica Balaban) presented two a cappella numbers involving intricate harmonies to add variety to the evening's experience, demonstrating the versatility of our Faculty of Music students. Kory Livingstone, Elvera Froese and Samantha Lee accompanied the singers or provided piano music on the new WLU Alumni Choir-purchased baby grand piano which was dedicated at the Founders' Luncheon the following day.
During the Cabaret, the Choir also recognized four persons who were instrumental in organizing the WLU Alumni Choir 10 years ago: Dan Lichti, Kathy Mauer, Bruce Armstrong and Evelyn Herron have worked tirelessly to keep the choir active and established the foundation for the scholarships which have been awarded to current music faculty students - Keith Knights Award since 2004 and the WLU Alumni Choir Scholarship since 2007.
