WATERLOO – The Honourable Tony Clement, president of the Treasury Board, will visit Wilfrid Laurier University Friday, June 8 to participate in a roundtable discussion with university researchers to discuss the federal government’s Open Data pilot initiative (www.data.gc.ca).
The initiative’s main objective is to make available a large amount of government survey and econometric data. Through the portal, more than 250,000 data sets are now available and downloadable free of charge to citizens, researchers, voluntary organizations, and private-sector businesses. Minister Clement will visit Laurier to consult with academic experts about the format and composition of data sets to be released.
“We are pleased that the federal government is supporting Laurier’s expertise in the fields of both public policy research and statistical analysis,” said Abby Goodrum, Laurier’s vice-president: research. “We welcome Minister Clement to our campus for this roundtable.”
In addition to the minister, the roundtable will include five associates of the Laurier Institute for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy (LISPOP) and a Laurier librarian.
“It is quite an honour for Laurier experts and LISPOP in particular to be asked for such input,” said Andrea Perrella, director of LISPOP and an assistant professor of political science. “We represent some of the heavier users of secondary survey data and, consequently, have a great deal of insight to offer.”
The roundtable will take place Friday, June 8 at 2:30 p.m. While the roundtable meeting is closed to the public, the minister will be available immediately after to meet with representatives of the media for questions related to the Open Data pilot initiative. Journalists interested in this opportunity are asked to contact Kevin Crowley, Laurier’s director of communications and public affairs, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
