Mediation scheduled in CAS contract negotiations
Mediation talks have been scheduled for Nov. 26 in the contract negotiations between Wilfrid Laurier University and the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association (WLUFA), which represents Contract Academic Staff (CAS).
The University and WLUFA have met more than 20 times since the start of negotiations in mid-May, and met with a provincially appointed conciliator on Oct. 23 and Nov. 4.
The No Board report requested by WLUFA was issued by the Ontario Ministry of Labour on Nov. 11, which puts Contract Academic Staff in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 28.
A No Board report is a government document that is frequently requested in contract negotiations and often prompts mediation and an eventual settlement.
The University is eager to continue talks with WLUFA and is committed to reaching a collective agreement that is in the best interests of students and the institution, and which takes into account the significant economic challenges affecting Laurier, the Ontario university sector and the broader public sector.
It is important to note that these labour negotiations involve Contract Academic Staff, not full-time faculty. If there is a strike involving CAS members, the University will do everything possible to minimize the disruption to students. The University will also do everything necessary to keep students informed about attending classes, submitting assignments and other key issues.
